Richmond Herman Dunbar
Richmond Herman Dunbar, (80), of Little Rock, AR, transitioned peacefully with dignity and grace on January 2, 2023. Richmond was born on Oct. 17, 1942, in England, Arkansas to the late Herman and Ellen Dunbar. He was a proud graduate of Horace Mann High School, class of 1960. After graduation, Richmond studied at Shorter Junior College in North Little Rock before serving his country as an E-1 sailor in the United States Navy.
First and foremost, Richmond was a dedicated father and grandfather. He worked diligently to provide for his family and was ever present. He retired from Union Pacific Railroad after a 30+ year career as a master train conductor. He was a member of First Baptist Highland Park for over 40 years, where he served on the Trustee Board. Currently, he enjoys being a member of Gaines Street Baptist Church under the direction of Pastor Barrington Minix, Jr. He took great pleasure in greeting parishioners on Sunday mornings as an usher. He was an avid sports fan and played recreational basketball well into his 50's. Richmond believed in community and civic duty, he was an active member in the National Dunbar Horace Mann Alumni Association (NDHMAA), as well as the Little Rock chapter of the NAACP. In his leisure time, he treasured opportunities to travel for family vacations, reunions, and to visit his daughters and granddaughters.
Richmond leaves to cherish his memory two daughters; Carmen Dunbar (Arlington, Texas) and Lisa Dunbar Ferguson (Louisville, Kentucky), two granddaughters; Alyssa Ferguson (Fort Lauderdale, Florida) and Alivia Ferguson (Louisville, Kentucky); his sister Thelma Dunbar (Little Rock, Arkansas) and his niece Katrina Warner (Little Rock, Arkansas). He also leaves behind beloved two grandnieces, one great-grandnephew, and a host of cousins and friends. He is preceded in death by his brother Milton Dunbar (Little Rock, AR); his father Herman Dunbar (Little Rock, AR); his mother Ellen Dunbar; his granddaughter Alana Elizabeth Ferguson (Louisville, KY); and his former wife of 47 years, Ethel Blake Dunbar.
Services will be held Saturday, January 7, 2023, 11:00am, Gaines Street Baptist Church, 1601 S. Gaines Street, Little Rock, Arkansas.
