The Plight of Calvin Lewis Brown, Sr., Ph.D.
On September 12, 2024, at the age of 77, angels escorted our beloved brother, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend, Calvin Lewis Brown, Sr., into the loving arms of Jesus. Calvin, affectionately known as “Brotherin,” is a name given to him by his late brother-in-law, Issac Abraham. Calvin was born September 3, 1947, in Keo, Arkansas, to the late Ruth Mae “Madea” Brown. He was preceded in death by his mother, brothers, Arthur L. Brown & William Earl “Peter” Cane, sister, Doris Cane-Pearson & Gladys “Honey Bee” Brown, grandparents Roland “Papa” and Mattie Rainey Abernathy “Aunt Mattie” Brown.
Calvin confessed his hope in Christ at an early age. He was a faithful member of the Christway Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend Roderick F. Torrence, Sr.
Calvin was a graduate of Little Rock Public High School, Horace Mann, class of 1965, at the age of 17. Moreover, he continued his endeavor to educate himself toward higher education. To that end, he graduated from Arkansas Baptist College in 1974 with a BA degree in Social Science and a Master of Public Administration (MPA) from the University of Arkansas Fayetteville-Fayetteville, AR, in 1976, concluding with a Doctor of Philosophy in Public Policy and Administration degree in 1994 from Jackson State University -Jackson, Mississippi.
Calvin’s efforts to practice public and administration included Administrative Assistant to Washington County Judge Vol B. Lester from 1974-1975; City of Little Rock, AR as Planning Program Analyst and Administrative Assistance from 1975-1978; Selection of Housing Direction; Program Development and Review Officer and Executive Director of the Housing Authority of the City of Little Rock, AR for more than 12 years. He served as an adjunct professor at Arkansas Baptist College from 1988 to 1994, adjunct professor at Jackson State University from 1992 to 1994, and associate professor at Portland State University from 1994 to 1999 in the subject matter of environmental management and public policy and administration.
Calvin answered his country’s call to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States of America and its allies. He served his country as a United States Air Force Warrant and Commission Officer. He served in the Vietnam War as an Administrative Intelligence Specialist. His duty assignment stations were in Thailand, Laos, and Cambodia with the 432nd Air America Technical Reconnaissance Intelligence Wing Units.
Calvin leaves to cherish his memory three sons: Calvin L. Brown, Jr.; Dr. Roland R. Brown, MD (Kamilah) and David Brown; one daughter, Elisa G. Brown; grandchildren: William “Bill,” Chris, Jermaine, Chance, Darren, Jr. “DJ,” Symphony, Liberty, Gift, Matthew and Amirah; brother Kenneth Cane, three sisters: Cora Duncan, Mattie Jackson, and Peggy Cane, nieces and nephews and a few friends.
